Did you know that humans, and therefore all mammals, have an endocannabinoid system composed of cannabinoid receptors? Don’t be intimidated by the name! We’ll call it the ECS system.
In this article I will tell you how this system works in our bodies and in our pets’ bodies and why it is so important for it to work properly.
You will see that cannabis in pets used as therapeutic marijuana has positive effects on health. The idea is to debunk the misconception that some people have about the cannabis plant that is so beneficial to health.
What is the ECS system?
Our bodies (and your pets’ too) produce cannabinoids which are receptors found in the brain, tissues, organs, glands and immune cells.
What is the function of this system?
Mainly to maintain the balance of the body’s psychological functions such as sleep, memory, appetite, pain and inflammation. In this way, if we improve our ECS system we can radically improve our health and quality of life.
Nothing better to enhance this system than to use natural compounds found in the cannabis plant. Contrary to what many believe, more than 200 phytocannabinoids have been discovered in this plant. Among them are CBD (cannabidiol) and CBDA (cannabinoid type) which are not psychoactive and can perfectly restore our ECS system.
Cannabinoids: CBD and CBDA
The first has anti-inflammatory, analgesic and anxiolytic properties; the second is also anti-inflammatory and prevents vomiting.
Terpenes
Terpenes are organic compounds only found in plant extracts such as cannabis. They are of the highest quality and have nothing to do with THC. The latter is the psychoactive substance found in marijuana, which is illegal in many countries at the moment, but is also beneficial to health at the right dose.
In fact, more studies are needed to determine the proper dosage of THC in pets. Terpene concentrations above 0.05% are of pharmacological interest.
In this sense, some terpenes can be found naturally in hops, black pepper, lavender, lemon, among others. Among their most renowned properties we can point out that they are anti-inflammatory, analgesic, sedative, muscle relaxant, anti-depressant.
Cannabis entourage effect on pets
If we combine the cannabinoids and terpenes in cannabis in a fair and balanced therapeutic dose, we get the “entourage effect”, i.e. a much more complete and comprehensive effect than if these components were used separately.
To achieve this effect, the different components of cannabis need to be brought together in appropriate doses plus the CBD: cannabinoids, terpenes, enzymes, receptors and mediators. This way, the natural components of cannabis are boosted and used to their fullest extent.
For this reason, it is not recommended to use products containing only CBD, as they have much less effect.
Regulations on the use of cannabis for pets
The use of veterinary products containing CBD is not currently regulated. However, the law allows the use of products not specifically authorized for animals as long as their benefits outweigh the risks.
What is well approved and tested are the human CBD-containing dietary supplements of cannabis that veterinarians can prescribe for their patients. In this regard, ElleVanceTM has succeeded in developing products with the right dosages for pets. The only legal requirement is that the permitted doses of psychoactive cannabinoids are not exceeded, which is perfectly complied with at all times.
As a veterinarian and a person, I have always loved animals. I am one of those who thinks that they have as much right as we do to lead a healthy and well-cared-for life. This is why, in addition to traditional medicine, I have resorted to natural therapies and supplements like these to treat my patients. Cannabis for pets and therapeutic marijuana are two very good alternatives. Seeing the results they produce is amazing and very rewarding.
